Ottawa Health offers a variety of cupping services, including hijama, wet cupping, dry cupping, and more, designed to promote health and wellness through ancient and effective therapeutic techniques.
Cupping is a vacuum therapy used for thousands of years and has its roots in China. It is also found in traditional medicine within Islam. This ancient technique increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed.
It’s used to tackle resistant pain, boost energy, alleviate muscle tension, and strengthen the immune system.
During a session, our cupping therapist Dr. Nivin Sharaf will place a cup on your skin and then heat it or suction it onto the skin. The cup is often heated with fire, using alcohol, herbs, or paper put directly into the cup. The fire source is removed, and the heated cup is placed with the open side on your skin.
Conditions That May Benefit From the Therapy
Since discovering cupping therapy and experiencing the benefits herself, Dr. Sharaf has taken 14 certified courses in cupping, acupuncture, and myofascial release.

This question is best discussed with Dr. Nivin directly. If you have a unique situation, we would advice to discuss with the provider.
Cupping therapy can be performed in a variety of ways. Our skilled Dr. Nivin has decades of experience and can customize the treatment based on your tolerance. Most people feel very relaxed and resting after their sessions.
This varies depending on the reason for the therapy. In some instances, patients will find relief immediately after the session. In other situations, it may require a few sessions before significant improvement can be appreciated.
