What is Metabolic Rate Testing?

Metabolic rate refers to the amount of food or calories that is converted to energy in a day. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the measurement of how much food, or energy, is required to keep essential bodily functions running throughout your day. Some of these functions include maintaining body temperature, heart beat, breathing, digestion, and more.

An RMR test will tell you exactly how many calories you burn at rest, doing nothing more than just sitting. We are pleased to offer this service to our Ottawa Health: Performance and Rehabilitation patients.

Why Test RMR?

  • General health function: In cases of uncontrolled weight gain or loss, testing your metabolic rate can help identify underlying health problems. This would be indicative to pursue further diagnosis by your physician.
  • Weight management: By knowing exactly how many calories your body requires, you can determine exactly how much food you should be eating. This is the simplest and most effective way to control weight gain as a preventive measure.
  • Weight loss planning: If the goal is to lose weight, knowing your RMR should be the first step before any drastic changes to your diet take place. By knowing exactly how many calories your body requires, you can create dietary plans that fulfill your requirements and make weight loss achievable. We have the tools to help you achieve your goals by working smarter, not harder.
  • Athletes and performance: Building muscle with minimal fat gains is most feasible if you know exactly how much food to eat. It’s easy to put on weight, but it is difficult to only put on muscular weight. A RMR test will help mitigate the risk of fat gains that often come with muscular development.

Our practitioners can calculate the amount of calories your body is using by calculating the amount of oxygen used during each breath. In order to “burn” 1 calorie (kilocalorie) while at rest, you need 208.06 milliliters of oxygen. This is a direct relationship between the amount of calories being burned and the amount of oxygen being consumed.

The test usually takes between ten and twenty minutes. You will be asked to dress comfortably while you breathe directly through a breathing tube that is connected to our metabolic testing device. During the test, you’ll be watching a calming show while you relax. All you need to do is breathe!

There are a variety of factors that influence your metabolism, such as the amount of exercise you perform, body temperature, fat-free mass, and more. Your metabolism will most likely change as you improve your level of fitness. Use these results before making any significant dietary changes. By knowing your resting metabolic rate, you’ll know exactly how many calories your body needs per day. Now you can begin changing your diet!

Each test includes a one-time use breathing tube and nose clips. These are non-reusable and cannot be recycled for re-testing.

  • Single test: $95.00 + HST
  • Package of 3: $250 + HST
The packages can be used with family or friends who also wish to get tested. For anyone looking to start an exercise and dietary program for weight loss, periodic testing is recommended every couple of months as the body re-adapts to the exercises. This will ensure consistent improvements and prevent regaining the weight.
